Unexpected phone call from my honey yesterday which started just like this -

Him: “What kind of knitting needles do you like?”

Me: “What? Did you say knitting needles?”

Him: “Yes, what kind of knitting needles do you like?”

Me: “Um, I like bamboo, like Clovers, and I like Addi Turbos.”

Him: “What?”

Me: “Addi Turbos. A, D, D, I, T, U, R, B, O. And I don’t like aluminum needles.”

Him: “Okay. It’s just that I’m thinking of you which makes me think of knitting.”

Me: “Well, I think of you too and then other times I think of knitting.” (hee hee!)

I wonder what I’m getting for Christmas? Happy Holidays Everyone!

7 More Knitting Days Until Christmas!

Posted in Knitting at 5:50 pm by delipics

The second to the last weekend before Christmas to get knitting presents completed coincided with my first cold of the season. You know you’re really sick when you don’t even want to knit. The weekend consisted of sleeping, interspersed with eating, and then sleeping again. I became conscious in the late afternoon and watched the U.S. version of Shall We Dance and Small Time Crooks. Luckily, I was able to finish one present earlier in the week, and since it didn’t take a lot of energy to block it — well, I blocked it.

Did anyone else see the the NYT review of Domiknitrix and Naughty Needles?

And yes, I know the comments section still don’t work and my pages aren’t linked. Didn’t I tell you I’m sick, cough, cough?

Holiday Knitting & Knitting Ethics 101

Posted in Cardigan(s), Knitting, Yarn at 6:37 pm by delipics

Picture me sitting at my desk, typing away on the computer. It’s all quiet in the office. I turn to my left and someone has left a box on my extra chair.

“MY YARN! . . . oops, sorry, that was loud.”

A very spontaneous outburst in the workplace. I was slightly embarrassed but then I excitedly opened the box of yarn from Yarnela. I was so happy to know that I can finish my cropped cardi - but then I realized I first have to finish knitting my Christmas gifts.

Why do I wait to the last minute to do these things? But it gives me a good reason to go to The Point over the weekend and sit with Alex and knit. While there I started a new knitted Christmas gift and she finished one of her Christmas gifts. (I wish I could show photos but everything is top secret until 12/25.) All the other knitters at the stored oohed and aahed over Alex’s project and several asked for a pattern. She’s so talented!

We also had a discussion on knitting ethics - if someone gives you yarn as a gift, and you knit this yarn up into a project as a gift for someone else, are you regifting? I laughed and said I should send this to The Ethicist. We decided it wasn’t regifting because you are creating something new out of the yarn.

But back to my cropped cardi - how can I schedule this in with all the holiday gift knitting that needs to get done? One gift is about 90% done - just needs fringe. A second project is almost 50% done. I haven’t started a third one yet - yikes! I’m just going to have to sneak in some knitting-for-me time and hope no one notices.

Getting Back On Track

Posted in Knitting at 6:31 pm by delipics

I am finally starting to feel like my life is getting back in order.

First, my kitchen ceiling was finally fixed this weekend. Yay! I like having a flat, even ceiling. My bathroom ceiling, which had some minor damage from a leak two years ago, also got repaired. I didn’t know the contractors were going to do that so it was a welcome surprise. After the contractors left (and they were the tidiest contractors I’ve encountered), I took this as an opportunity to do a thorough cleaning of the kitchen, move around the furniture, and get rid of junk. I can’t tell you what a great feeling it was to see the final results of my work.

Next, I ordered more yarn to finish my cropped cardi. Amazingly, I found the color AND the right dye lot at Yarnela. They were very friendly and helpful to me. I also want to put out again a HUGE !thank you! to my KB@W who did the search on the links for my yarn. I could not have found that yarn without your help.

The rest of December is all Christmas for me. I’m very much in the Christmasy mood. So far, I have organized my Christmas card list. I’m going to put my tree up this week (it’s a retro silver tree and I love it!). I braved the crowds at Target on Atlantic Avenue to buy Christmas linens and ornaments for my table (that was absolutely insane). Starting the holiday baking - I’m planning to bake my cranberry pistachio biscotti Wednesday night. I bought some gifts for my honey tonight (I’ve discovered shopping on a Monday night is relatively calm), and I’m buying the rest of my gifts online.

Speaking about the season of giving - I’m going to make a plug for Heifer International. If you are looking for a knitting related gift that will also do a lot of good, you can buy a share in the Knitting Basket (two llamas and two sheep to help a struggling family), a share in a sheep or llama, and many other types of livestock to assist impoverished families.

The next project to tackle is this blog!
