Jumping On the Jane Bandwagon

Posted in Uncategorized at 5:46 pm by delipics

Yes, she’s one of my favorite authors . . . Yes, I’ve read all her books . . . Yes, I read The Jane Austen Book Club . . . . and since the new movie, Becoming Jane, is coming out, here’s a few Austen-related links - knitting and non:

And if you have at least two hours or more to spare out of your life - go on over to You Tube, type in “Jane Austen” in the search window, and watch watch watch! Definitely view what The NYT recommends.

Hey A - Still thinking about that party with the food of Jane Austen’s time-period theme?

And I can’t wait for this in 2008 - someone stop me from buying all the videos!

Bandages and Ice Packs

Aaaarrrrggghhhhcccccczk! Can you tell how I’m feeling today? The cry of the frustrated fiber-less artist. The closest I’ve come to anything fiber related was letting Caroline (back from a two month stint at Peter’s Valley - she’s sooooo lucky!) go through my plastic bag collection (apparently she hit the mother-lode of plastic bags with me) for her latest cool project. The kitchen floor was strewn with plastic bags of various sizes and colors and one very happy kitty who quickly sat on a pile of bags to claim as her own. I should have taken a picture of Cleo, she looked so satisfied. As I pulled out my massive collection of plastic out of the cabinet, I was amazed to find this stowed away at the back –

What the ?!?!? I think this was a Christmas gift from many, many years ago. I had put it in the rear of the cabinet with the label facing away so I never ever noticed it the few times I may have had a reason to go fishing around in the back looking for God-knows-what. I got a good laugh after finding it but I don’t know what to do with it. I know - of course I could try and make it! But I’m afraid - does this stuff go bad? Something about it says “Warning: Disaster of immense proportions.” Right now I just keep moving it around from different spots in the kitchen, staring at it quizzically while Cleo sniffs and walks away bored.

As for the wrist, last week, for the first time, I was very discouraged about the status of my healing. I let myself go into a tizzy after running into another person who actually had the operation for carpal tunnel. She told me her wrist used to feel like it was on fire and since the operation she just sometimes gets stiff, but she is pain-free. When I told this to my PT she tried to calm me down - the MRI would have shown any abnormalities, it takes a long time for soft tissue to heal especially since I have to keep working, etc. Along with the funky taping, I’m wearing an Ace bandage around my forearm for more support and it does make a difference. I wear it for about three hours and then I take a break from being wrapped for another two hours or so. I’m supposed to ice it twice a day but I keep forgetting to do it so I need to improve that. I’d like to say I really am having more better days than not but sometimes it’s hard to tell. Wait, there is good news - my left wrist hardly ever is in pain!

Lest you think everything is all about bandages and ice packs at Delica’s Yarns, I was busy last weekend –

Only If I’m Good

Posted in CTS/RSI, shopping at 4:25 pm by delipics

Frustration level was high the beginning of this week when I had to say no to an intensive Summer Spinning II class because of my wrists. I kept thinking, “Maybe I can do this . . . ,” but then I gave myself a doh slap, “You have got to get better first!” Even though I know it’s for the best, I’m still upset because taking this class was on my list of summer fiber goals. I’m keeping focused on the fall for all sorts of fiber catching-up.

But now for the good news - my PT says if I’m good all weekend and I don’t have any pain I can start strengthening exercises. My right wrist is getting better but it has also become weak. Monday I actually had no pain for most of the day. The rest of this week has been off and on but still mostly pain free.

In my longing to knit I’ve actually been thinking of buying this.

My Avatar

Yahoo! Avatars

One of things I’ve been fooling around with since I can’t knit.

I find it to be a bit amazing that Yahoo is culturally sensitive and has Filipino clothing and backgrounds for selection. I wonder how it was decided to design these Filipino avatar elements. Did they get emails requesting it? Is there an influential Asian executive who insisted on it? Was it the marketing department who looked at demographics and saw a mass of people who like to shop? And why lavender for this dress? This dress should have embroidery or beading - I’ve never seen a Filipino formal dress this simple.

This background is the Philippine Vigan town. (Type “vigan town” on Google to see many links about it.) I also could have chosen from rice terraces, Philippine bay walk, Jeepney background or Philippine nipa huts. I was feeling literal at the time and just couldn’t see my avatar in this gorgeous outfit strolling along the rice terraces or in traffic with jeepneys speeding by. So here she is, all dressed up with a flirty flower in her hair - maybe she’s going to a festival.

Yahoo called this the “tagalog dress”. I have never heard this dress called a tagalog dress. When I was a little girl, I always knew it as the butterfly dress because of the sleeves. A quick search on Google again and I learned this dress is called a terno. I also found a possible inspiration for the style of the dress here.

This is my one dress from the Philippines, but I’m not sure if this is called a terno. It’s not as formal but it is dressy.

I remember my mother used to have beautiful ternos when I was still a little girl. I always wondered what happened to those dresses.
