Random Friday Fiber Links
With a Christmas theme -
yarn n. 1: a continuous often plied strand composed of natural or man made fibers 2: a narrative of adventures
Nothing like a post-Thanksgiving stomach virus to help you get over the Thanksgiving holiday. I’m still recovering because right after the tummy aches came a regular, miserable cold. I’ve been eating what I call the “white diet”: saltines, plain yogurt, bananas, and pasta supplemented with chicken soup, ginger ale and Gatorade. All very small portions, such as four pieces of ravioli, because I want to avoid the tummy rumbles. In between my napping and sniffling, I’ve been doing Christmas knitting.
These are short rows. Short rows makes me think of short ribs but sadly, I can’t eat those now. It’s strange not being hungry. I know I have to eat even though I am sick, so I eat bland food, but in my Robitussin-influenced dreams I am eating savory, delicious food. (I love how in my dreams my senses are still awake - it’s not just moving pictures in my head. I can feel something physical, like soft fabric, or actually taste a meal. I have a very active dream-life.) I’ve been thinking about what I will eat when my tummy finally feels normal. On the top of the list is a basic beef burger or something cheesey and tomatoey - lasagna maybe . . . mmmm, lasagna.
Oh, I was going to end this post with dreaming/sleeping and then this photo but I got distracted by food. Cleo is adorable when she naps.
I bought the Winter Interweave Knits and the Holiday Gift issue. I’m not sure what clicked in my head as I was looking at the patterns but I started to think about the variety of knit designs and the talent and work that goes into each one. Then I thought about all the knitting magazines out there showcasing knitting patterns - that’s a lot of knitting. Then I thought about all the books that have been published with knitting designs - that’s a lot of knitting. Then I thought about all the blogs of knitters writing about and creating their knitting - that’s aaay looot of knitting! (I’m not even going to go into all the connected fiber arts and fiber accessories - can you imagine!) It’s truly amazing and mind-boggling the amount of knitting that’s going on, even right now as I write this - even right now as you are reading this - there is someone out there, right now, knitting.
Just my knitting went to Germany, not me, but I live vicariously through my honey. Look at my handsome guy posing in Dresden and wearing his 2006 Christmas scarf.

He was touring in Germany, performing as Pete with The Wholigans, along with the opener band, the Black Olives, consisting of Andrei -

and another Darren, but sorry - no photo. (that’s a nice hat, hon - LOL). I think my Darren deserves another hand knit hat this year. Hmmm. My honey also likes Emil’s vest, which is a Fair Isle. I think I need a book on Fair Isle (*hint*hint*Christmas*gift!*).
Watch both bands play here. Sign in as “guest” and the password is “guest123.” I watched the video with some of my friends, waiting for my honey to say hello to me - we all screamed like teenage girls when he yelled my name!
What a weekend: a 4-year-old’s birthday party on Saturday and a very, very good friend’s wedding on Sunday. Weddings in general are fun, and when it’s for a friend who has been on the roller coaster of life with you (alternately screaming in fun and at times in fear but always there), then it is a serious party! I ate and danced and imbibed and danced some more. And then by the end of the evening I had some sort of weird allergic reaction to I-don’t-know-what that sent me first into sniffles, then congestion, which resulted in a dose of Benadryl on the car ride back. I wanted to pass out but I had to give directions home via the BQE. Boy, did I pay for my celebrating today and it was totally worth it!
Obviously, there was no fiber related activity but I got two tips on sewing crochet to fabric - one from here and another friend sent me this link (okay, it’s knitting but should be somewhat similar). Thank you!
