Raindrops on Pillows

Posted in Crochet, Photos, Sewing at 5:42 pm by delipics

I have been getting massive spam in the comments. Bad juju in the blogosphere - is it because of Halloween? I had to put in some limits.

This is what has been happening - buying fabric at a steal for $3 a yard. I bought one yard of each; the raindrops for my floor pillows and the other two for, who knows? Most likely bags.
FabricPurchase10-07.JPG

I think the raindrops fabric goes with my crochet, so one half crochet and the other half fabric.

I’ve never sewn crochet to fabric so I’ll need to do some research. I’m sure it’s not that difficult but I’ll check out the blogosphere on technique.

SOFAntastic!

Posted in Crochet, Photos at 4:01 pm by delipics

I bought a new couch and I love it!

Which means that the throw pillows for my old couch are ready to be revamped. I’m going to crochet new covers for them and use them as floor pillows. I told a co-worker about my idea and what type of yarn I would like to use and voila - she pulls out a cone of yarn that she’s not using and gives it to me! Talk about meant to be.

I take the yarn home and start making swatches. Top swatch is with a K hook, middle is a J hook and the bottom is the I hook.

FloorPillowSwatch.JPG

I’ve decided I like the middle swatch. This is my plan - so far:

FloorPillowSketch.JPG

I am thinking of attaching the sections with the seams showing on the outside. I want the pillow to look rustic; I think the contrast of the rustic with the modern lines of the couch will work well.

I also did this for a friend’s baby shower this past weekend - this is the first version:

The next day I looked at it and realized it was missing something:

That last curved line completed the image. I can’t wait to see how it looks on the little guy. I really wanted to knit something for my friend’s baby but since I couldn’t due to the CTS/RSI, this is the next best thing for now.

Knitting Assignment: Project Swatch

Posted in Crochet, Knitting, Lace Knitting, Music, Photos, Techniques, fashion at 4:04 pm by delipics

I changed my mind about my project for The Knitting for Pleasure class because I was concerned about what I could actually complete within the time frame. I’m aiming for a lacy vest/tank combo - empire waist, ribbon laced at the bustline, good for layering. Bit vague sounding but it’s still in the developmental stage.

I decided on the Chain Stitch from the Mon Tricot Knitting Dictionary. Yes, the same yarn as for my Lace Shawl. I thought about buying more yarn but common sense prevailed and I decided to go with what is already in the stash.
KFPProjectSwatch2.JPG

I want to use this pattern for the body and a rib pattern for the bust area. The first time I did the rib, it didn’t line up with the chain stitch. See how it is all the way to the right at the top?

KFPProjectSwatch1.JPG

I frogged and and re-knit the rib pattern to line up with the eyelets. I did a practice decrease on one edge so I could envision what a v-neck may look like. Learning how to do all those ssk and K2tog tbl from the Lace Shawl was good practice for figuring this part out. (Does anyone else find this kind of stuff exciting? I figured out which way to do the decrease - on my own - and I was just so pleased!)

KFPProjectSwatch3.JPG

I also did that picot bind-off as a possible edging. Not sure if I like it, maybe if I space it out more? The wrong-side of the swatch - hmm, maybe I should do the rib for the body and the chain stitch for the bust area?

KFPProjectSwatch4.JPG

I’m also going to sent this off (finally!) to my sis - another Santa Cruz Hat. I really enjoy knitting this pattern. I used up the free Patons SWS soy/wool yarn from The Yarn Harlot event at FIT. It looks a little blobbish here on the ground . . .

SantaCruzHat4Sis1.JPG

. . . so I took a quick pic (actually, not so much quick as acrobatic arm-wise so you don’t see the camera in the mirror) of me wearing it so you can see the pattern stretched out over my head.

Women Bloggers

Posted in Crochet at 10:09 am by delipics

My mom sent me an article from the Boston Globe about women and blogging.

I am not surpised more women blog than men - women are connectors, we like to develop relationships, we like to be a part of our communities. It’s all about the networking, baby!

Towards the end of the article one individual reflects on life, pre- and post-blog. Upon reflection of my post-blog life, I would have to sum it up in two words:

Empowering & Creative

On the fiber front:

I worked for a little bit on my Sweet Pea Shawl. I decided to frog back to the first row and remove four shells because I think it would have been too wide for me if I had not. So I’ve crocheted back to the third row and that’s where I am now. Can I get this done by August 26th? Things are moving very slowly because of the hot weather. There is always crocheting on the plane ride out towards my event. The good thing about this shawl is that every pattern-stitch row decreases so the next row always seems to go by a little bit faster.

I Want To Go Back There

Posted in Crochet, NYC, Photos at 4:24 pm by delipics

It was a busy weekend attending a family celebration, but there is always time to do a little shopping. My group was at Rockefeller Center when we walked by the Kinokuniya Bookstore, a Japanese bookstore. I have been curious about it, and this time I finally went in.

What a great place! I was completely enthralled by it. First I wandered around and randomly picked up magazines, but when I realized the sections also had English labels, I went straight to the Art / Design and the Craft / Hobbies shelves. In Art & Design I again randomly selected books and flipped through them, enjoying the photographs and their layout. I am fascinated by Japanese design and aesthetic, and certainly with their textile / fiber history. At the Craft / Hobbies section I was more focused in my search. I already have a Japanese book on felting where the photos and drawings are so clear that it is unecessary to know the Japanese language to be able to follow the directions. Because of that, I had a feeling I could find a knitting or crochet book. There were so many to choose from and I chose these two crochet books:

I have been examining the photos and drawings, and I think I have figured out the instructions for the patterns. It’s a good thing that crochet charts are an international language! Here is a sample of what the directions look like –

I want to go back there. There were so many books I did not get a chance to look at. There was an oragami section that I did not get to check out and who knows what other treaures exist.

Besides yarn stores, bookstores are another place from which I cannot resist purchasing something. Buying a book is about the experience of finding something new or suprising that will add to your life. There is also the search and discovery aspect of book shopping. There is always another book you want to go back for and buy, and it is so difficult to buy only one book!

A Delica’s Yarns Weekend

Posted in Crochet, Dying, Knitting, Photos, Socks, Yarn at 6:08 pm by delipics

It started on Friday, at lunch time - notice the bag of chocolates to keep us motivated. KB@W with the lavender yarn (Hey DR, I’m stuck on the same fricking stitch!) is crocheting a baby blanket and KB@W below is knitting a poncho (just like mine!).

KB@W3.JPG

KB@W2.JPG

KB@W1.JPG

I love the yarn she’s using, one of the Karabella cottons (I can’t remember if it is the DK or the worsted) that she bought on a run to School Products. You cannot tell in the photo, but the yarn has the most wonderful sheen to it.

On Saturday I finally went to my first summer BBQ at which I pulled out my sock to work on during eating breaks. It went something like this: eat hot dog, digest, eat chicken, digest, guiltily eat salad and fruit after the meat-fest.

On Sunday, it being a beautiful sunny day, perfect for hanging yarn outside to dry, I decided to Kool-Aid dye –

KDyeBrightGreen.JPG

This skein of Reynolds Lopi has been sitting around patiently, waiting to be dyed the perfect color. I wanted a green so I decided to mix lemon-lime and arctic green apple Kool-Aid - yowza! The results being this electric green. I think I will dye this again to tone down the eye-blinding intensity, poor thing.

Next, took photos of my swatches for the summer wrap I want to make. The pattern is the Sweet Pea Shawl, by Amie Hirtes, in Stitch ‘N Bitch Crochet: The Happy Hooker. The first swatch is from an unidentified boucle cone of yarn that I have had sitting around since my college days. The second is Lion Brand’s Textures Chenille that I found in the discounted yarn bin at an art supply store near work.

WrapSwatch2.JPGWrapSwatch4.JPG

In my July 6th post I vowed to knit this wrap only using yarns from my stash - NO YARN BUYING. I do have a couple other yarns I could try, but I think I may use the boucle yarn. It shows-off the shell pattern better than the chenille.

And the latest completed Delica’s Yarn project - WHOOT - my first-pair-of-socks ever!!!

KoiguSocksDone2.JPG

Specs:

  • I used Koigu KPPPM, 100% merino wool
  • On Clover US 1 (2.25 mm) bamboo double pointed needles
  • Following the Koigu Fun Socks master pattern

These socks feel great and they fit, which is a big deal for me because I have small feet. Love the Koigu, of course, anxious to buy more of it. And now that I have learned how to make them, I must knit another pair of socks. Oooh, it’s a whole new sock world out there . . .
